Background: The aim of this study was to assess knowledge of the principles of chronic treatment of asthma and its exacerbations, the drugs available and to understand the experiences of doctors in the treatment with combination preparations.
Material and methods: The assessed group consisted of 201 physicians, mainly allergists and pulmonologists. The research tool was a survey questionnaire.
Results: Doctors prescribe patients with asthma IGCS, but not all mention this as the group of drugs that is most commonly used. Short-acting β2-agonists are mostly recommended in exacerbations. Budesonide and formoterol are used with similar frequency, while the long-acting β2-agonists prefer salmeterol. Leukotriene receptor antagonists and associated preparations are very rarely mentioned. The choice of method of treatment is determined mainly by severity of the disease. Doctors declare good knowledge of the SMART (82%) therapy, but only 34% give Symbicort as a drug used in it.
Conclusions: 1– Knowledge of the principles of chronic treatment of asthma in accordance with GINA guidelines among doctors is not satisfactory.
2 – Doctors rarely recommend combined preparations to their patients.
