Usefulness of bronchial thermoplasty in treatment of asthma

Bronchial thermoplasty is a novel, promising but controversial additional endoscopic asthma treatment procedure. Essence is reduction of mass of airway smooth muscle which prevent bronchial bronchoconstriction in a cause of specific and non specific stimulation.
The first study was undertaken to asses a optimal temperature (75°C) and their safety and efficacy and achieve of permanent effect of disruption at behavior of ability for full regeneration other structures in bronchial wall.
The clinical trials AIR (Asthma Intervention Trials), RISA (Research in Severe Asthma) and AIR-2 show a little adverse events such as:. cough, wheezing, shortness of breath and worsening of asthma symptoms during the period immediately after treatment. The effects of bronchial thermoplasty were evident from 3 month after the procedure as an improvement of quality of life and asthma control, reduction medical visits and days lost from work/school activities and hospitalization.
Bronchial thermoplasty issues promising and relatively safe method of asthma treatment, but farthest research are indispensable for singling out group of asthmatic patients in whom its application carrying biggest benefit.
