Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease that can provide in some patients to progressive, irreversible damage of respiratory tract. Asthmatic inflammation develops because of interaction between inflammatory cells and release mediators. Clinical manifestation of chronic inflammation is associated with bronchoconstriction, mucus secretion, epithelial edema and damage of airways epithelium. Many diagnostic procedures that quantify inflammatory mediators have potential usefulness in monitoring of disease severity. Because of chronic nature of asthma early recognition and adequate treatment are the main preventive elements.
Early recognition of inflammatory process and airway remodeling in the future will be main elements of proper treatment. In article some elements of allergic inflammation and remodeling in children are also discussed.
